Follow up to the missing 100,000 applicants

In 2007 UCAS published 'Missed Opportunities? Non-placed applicants (NPAs) in the UCAS data', which was a quantitative analysis of UK-domiciled applicants in 2003 to 2006, who had not, by the end of their admissions cycle, been successfully placed on a full-time course at a UK higher education institution (HEI). To view a pdf of the report please click here.

The concluding remarks in the report provide the objectives for this follow up research project: 'The question of why these applicants remain unplaced in higher education cannot be answered in this investigation. The precise blend of reasons is highly individualised, and qualitative, longitudinal work would be required to access these more closely.'

This research aims to investigate the reasons behind NPA status, through quantitative and qualitative analysis of UCAS data, survey and online forum responses and interviews.
